Quote of the Day

"Imagine backpacking into fields of blueberries and crowberries, and after some epic rain, waking up to a bluebird day looking right at Mount McKinley, Mount Hunter and Mount Foraker, with plenty of time to explore the scene photographically."

~Janet Bogue,  2011 Denali Photography Workshop participant

2011 student photographing the Alaska Range from their camp.

We are offering the photography workshop August 20-25, 2012 in conjunction with the fantastic autumn colors of the tundra. Join outdoor and photography experts, Tom Bol and Colby Coombs to experience and capture the beauty and diversity of Alaska.

Fall Projects at AMS HQ

With the last course over and all of the guides headed south, it's time for projects at the AMS headquarters. We've been fixing leaky roofs, repairing gear, raking leaves and a lot more to go before the snow flies.

12 Day Mountaineering

AMS Instructor Joe Butler with students Travis and Justin are all smiles after an amazing 12 day mountaineering course.  They flew back frrom the the Alaska Range's Eldridge Glacier today, and are now busy hanging tents and sorting equipment. They had a great time out there and are looking forward to their next adventures!

Their return marks the final course for the AMS 2011 climbing season, well done and welcome back!

September 6 Day Mountaineering Course Returns!

It is a fabulous sunny day in Talkeetna and thoughout the Alaska Range. The AMS six day mountaineering course just returned from their classroom on the Southeast Fork of the Kahiltna Glacier (aka basecamp).

They are currently sorting their gear, hanging tents to dry and munching on tasty snacks here at the AMS HQ.  The team is happy and report that they had a great time in the mountains.  They have obviously learned a great deal from their instructors Melis Coady and John Sykes on this course - they are working like a well oiled machine.

Welcome back September 6 day mountaineering course!

12 Day Mountaineering Course Shoveling and Climbing

Guide Joe Butler just phoned in from the Eldridge Glacier. They been learning a lot despite some challenging weather. They skied to a nunatak (exposed rock jutting out of the glacier) down glacier and climb it.

6 Day Mountaineering Course

Another busy day at AMS.  The final 6 day course of the season is preparing to launch.  Instructors Melis Coady and John Sykes have been working hard all day checking and weighing gear, advising students about lunch packing.  Now they are instructing before the flight. Here is John teaching knots and rope climbing skills.

It is September and we've still got climbing on the mind. Today is day one of our 12 Day Mountaineering Course led by guide, Joe Butler. We also have a birthday celebration Glacier Trek heading into the range guided by AMS owner, Colby Coombs.

There's another mountaineering course starting on September 4...and room for a few more students.
